Practical Advice for Decorating Small Bedroom

2009 September 27

Decorating small bedroom can be a challenge, but it's not as hard as you might think! There are many things you can do to make the most of the space you have to work with.

PLAN YOUR SPACE

First, plan your space. The bed is, of course, the focal point when decorating a bedroom. Decorating small bedrooms does not mean that you need small furniture. In fact, using larger furniture will actually make the bedroom feel more cozy and inviting. When you are short on space, consider purchasing bedroom furniture that can double as storage space. For instance, a bed with under bed storage is a perfect choice for a small room. The drawers underneath the bed are great for storage. Use the drawers as a dresser, that way you may only need to have a bedside table next to the bed. Choose a larger table, perhaps 2X3, so that it can do double duty as a work table, or writing desk. A comfortable storage chair and ottoman will complete the furnishings in this room.

Sleigh beds also work well for decorating small bedrooms. You can put the bed alongside the wall and put several large decorative pillows against the wall, making a nice seating area for daytime use, and it makes the bed look oh so cozy and inviting! A sophisticated daybed is another great choice. Consider putting storage organizers underneath the bed, they can easily be hidden from view with a beautiful Bed Skirt. With the bed against the wall, you will have more room space to work with. Find some beautiful trunks that can also be used for storing linens, blankets or whatever else you need to store. The trunks, if sturdy, can also be used to sit on. Scour flea markets, estate sales and garage sales if you like, to find some interesting pieces.

STORAGE

Storage and organization is key for any bedroom, but especially for decorating small bedrooms. Clutter in a bedroom is very distracting, and can make it harder to relax, or fall asleep, so get and stay organized!

Attach bookshelves up on the walls to free up floor space. Do the same with lighting, use wall-mounted swing-arm lamps instead of floor lamps.

DECORATING STYLES

Consider the style you would like to use for decorating a small bedroom. If you want to keep the warm and cozy feeling going, consider using earth tones, and muted shades of color with accents of a bolder color carried into pillows for the bed, or a window treatment. Wallpaper is probably not the best choice for decorating a small bedroom. Instead, opt for paint in an ecru or eggshell color. If you do choose to use wallpaper, make sure that you choose a medium size pattern. Small patterns are to busy and fussy looking in a small bedroom, and a large pattern will overwhelm the room.

Choose a comforter in muted shades of autumn, like browns and golds. A nice fluffy Quality Down Comforter makes the bed very cozy and inviting. Choose a down comforter one size larger than the size of the bed for an extra cozy and luxurious look. Choose sheets in a lighter muted color like ecru or eggshell. For an extra luxurious feel, consider purchasing Luxury linens with a high thread count. The higher the thread count the silkier and lighter the sheets will feel. A thread count above 300 is best, but Sheet Sets with a thread count of 200-250 are fine for every day use. Accessorize by adding three or four large decorative pillows in red, and burnt orange shades to set off the browns and golds.

Carry the red or burnt orange shade into the window treatments. Consider room darkening shades and a valance. Room shades are great because they can be pulled up during the day to let in sunshine, and also are great for keeping the room dark when it's time to sleep!

ACCESSORIES

When decorating small bedrooms, make sure to use bold accessories such as accent candleholders, or bowls of potpourri. Use large rather than small accessories, and limit them to 3 or 4 pieces that you really love. Using larger accessories keeps the room from looking cluttered.

Choose one or two nice framed prints to compliment your color selection and style and you are done! Or you might want to hang a collection of different size and style mirrors on the wall behind the bed. This is a really fun look, and it can be quite fun scouring garage sales, estate sales, and flea markets to find interesting pieces to add!

As you can see, decorating small bedrooms can be fun, and not as hard as it might seem! Happy decorating!
