The external simplicity of the building belied its interior - every comfort had been thought of and supplied in the spacious room. A large inviting bed, armchairs with lots of cushions, a beautifully appointed bathroom and a perfectly private deck with chairs to sit and admire the landscape and huge open skies.

After enjoying the complimentary champagne thoughtfully provided we strolled over to the main house for dinner. All the guests eat together with their guide so you can be unlucky if your fellow diners are not on the same wavelength. That said dinner itself was delicious - a delicate soup followed by meltingly tender beef.

The following morning we were woken with tea at 7.00 in time for a "light" breakfast before heading out on a game drive. Our guide, Les, was knowledgeable and charming and worked so hard to ensure that we saw not only fantastic game and birdlife but also appreciated the dramatically varying landscape of the Karoo. The fact that he was born in the area may have contributed to his enthusiasm.

My preconceived idea about the Karoo being flat was quite wrong. Mountains, meadows, thicket and vast areas reminiscent of the great African plains - all within a mornings drive. I had no idea it was so beautiful and a great contributory factor to our enjoyment was that we did not see another vehicle. I am lucky to have travelled extensively within Africa and been to several game lodges but found myself rather weary of the same old routine - guides radioing to other guides and all descending on one of the big five with vehicles taking it in turns for pole position so that their punters can take photoraphs to impress friends on their return home. There is none of that at Samara and what a joy it is to be privileged to be given that experience of uninterrupted nature.

On the second day after another sumptuous dinner we stalked cheetah on foot and Les led us to a Mother and her six cubs. We were able to watch them from as close as 20 feet - far closer than I had ever been to wild cheetah on foot. This will remain ingrained in my memory.

I could go on - the relaxing facial massage given by Elaine, the plentiful supply of drinks and nibbles on the game drives, the fact that lunch and dinner were moveable feasts in a different location each time, the "proper" pillows, the smiling staff.......we were made to feel so welcome and felt at home instantly.

We were sad to leave Samara - two days is barely enough to sratch the surface and begin to absorb the atmosphere.

My admiration for the owners is immense. They have created a uniquely special place in this fascinating wilderness and they have taken the time to do it with the respect that it demands. I hope they succeed in making Samara the commercial success that it deserves to be but selfishly I don't want too many people to know about it....

I have told my husband about Samara and he longong to visit - he will love everything about it. I am just worried he will want to buy a farm in the Karoo too......

Until recently, most Americans had never heard of bed bugs. You might run across an occasional reference to bed bugs while reading a book about life aboard the ships of 17th century explorers or a novel set in the squalid cities of the 19th century Industrial Revolution; but most people dismissed bed bugs with body lice and human fleas as problems of earlier, less sanitary eras in human history. The development of powerful synthetic pesticides during World War II effectively eliminated the bed bug problem in the U.S. and most industrialized countries, although bed bugs have remained problematic in less developed nations.

A persistent scourge throughout recorded human history, new research indicates that bed bugs may have developed in the Mediterranean area from bat parasites, gradually migrating to the humans that shared their caves. As man moved out of caves and across the continents, bed bugs moved with their human hosts. Traders and sea-faring explorers eventually spread bed bugs to the most remote corners of the world. Bed bugs are now found around the world wherever humans live and continue to spread with their human hosts.

Entomologists believe that increased international air travel, made affordable by fare reductions after the 1990s deregulation of the airline industry, has played a major role in the resurgence of bed bugs in North America, Europe and Australia. By the late 1990s, bed bug infestations in the U.S. were being reported in the international gateway cities of New York, San Francisco and Miami. The exponential growth of these prolific insects has allowed U.S. bed bug populations to increase by 500% in just a few years with bed bugs now found in all 50 states. Although their reappearance on the U.S. insect scene seems sudden to a generation of Americans who are unfamiliar with this pest, bed bugs have been man's common bedfellow for centuries.

Bed bug fossils dating back 3,500 years, not long after the last Great Ice Age, have been discovered at archeological digs. During the early days of the Roman Empire, naturalist Pliny the Elder documented a snake bite cure made with bed bugs. According to ancient Greek and Roman writings, bed bugs were a common ingredient in medicinal potions. Medieval European manuscripts mention the use of bed bugs in homeopathic cures, a practice that appears to have continued into the early 1900s, according to The History of Bed Bug Management by University of Kentucky bed bug expert Michael Potter. Published in the spring 2011 edition of American Entomologist, Potter's article notes the recommendation of a bed bug solution for the treatment of malaria in an 1886 edition of a popular American medical text. Despite their presumed curative use, historical writings also record practices and treatments for getting rid of bed bugs and treating their bites.

Early Greek philosopher Democritus wrote that hanging the feet of a rabbit or deer at the foot of the bed would ward off bed bugs. North Americans believed in the preventative power of bear skins, draping them over their beds or tacking them to bedroom walls to deter bed bugs. Colonial Americans treated bed bug bites with a liniment made from vinegar, turpentine, wine, camphor and raw egg. When a Victorian gentleman traveled, he took along a pig that was placed in the hotel bed to attract feeding bed bugs before the gentleman retired for the evening.

Over the centuries, people have tried all manner of treatments to rid their homes of bed bugs. They have doused their beds with boiling water, kerosene, turpentine, alcohol, gasoline and other caustic chemicals. In the 1800s and early 1900s, mixtures containing arsenic and mercury were brushed onto beds and walls to eliminate bed bugs. Although smelly, burning sulfur was used as an early fumigant. Made from dried chrysanthemum flowers, pyrethrum was a popular insecticide in the mid-1800s. In the 1920s and 1930s, hydrogen cyanide fumigation was the preferred method of killing bed bugs, despite its deadly potential. During World War II, the army found blow torches to be effective in killing bed bugs harboring in metal barracks beds. Few of these do-it-yourself efforts had any impact on bed bug infestations, at best providing a few days of relief. That changed in 1939 when Swiss scientist Paul Muller discovered the remarkable insect-killing properties of DDT, earning him the 1948 Nobel Prize. What made DDT unique was its residual killing effect. Unlike other products that killed only on direct contact, DDT kept killing insects that crossed its path for months after application. It was the game changer in the war on bed bugs.

By 1945, inexpensive DDT-based products were readily available to U.S. consumers. Almost immediately, scientists began warning that DDT had a dark side. While DDT was amazingly efficient at killing problem insects by disrupting the organism's nerve cells, it had a long half-life, staying potent in soil for an extended period of time. According to a 1945 Time magazine article, the U.S. Department of Agriculture that year released the results of a 2-year study, reporting: "1) DDT is unquestionably the most promising insecticide ever developed; but 2) It is not yet safe for general use." Public reaction launched the U.S. environmental movement and led to the U.S. banning of DDT in 1972. Mindful of DDT's lesson, modern bed bug researchers are working to develop sophisticated pest control materials that will effectively target bed bugs without collateral damage to human health or the environment.

Scientists estimate that it may be 10 years before viable products reach the marketplace. In the interim, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued a joint statement warning bed bug victims not to attempt home treatment and recommending that they promptly contact a licensed pest control company for professional extermination if they discover bed bugs in their home. Multiple applications of a combination of EPA-approved bed bug control products that attack bed bugs from multiple directions provide the most reliable and most affordable method of bed bug elimination available today. Now, whether you get nightclub or hotel insurance, make sure each policy covers public liability.  If they do, you will be protected against claims of negligence.  For example, if someone falls on a freshly mopped floor, and a "Wet Floor" sign was not in place, you would not be responsible for the damages.  The negligent employee responsible for the accident would also be protected. 
Contents insurance should also be covered in your policy.  With this protection, you will receive compensation if there is any theft, damage or vandalism on the fixtures inside your building.   The same is also true with your company's belongings, like beds or exercise equipment.  Indeed, with contents protection, you could end up saving thousands, as you would not have to replace these items out of pocket.

Now for those that are on the bar side of hospitality, there are special pub insurances.  They address more unique concerns in comparison to hotel or night club insurance.  Since bar owners have more contents to worry about, they need a different level of protection.  However, their coverage may not be as extensive as nightclub or hotel insurance, simply because their interaction with the public is different.  If a bar does not have a dance floor, it is more like a restaurant (at least in the eyes of an insurance provider).

There you have it… the basics behind hospitality insurance.  If you own a hotel, bar or nightclub, you need to get your hands on these policies.  Otherwise, you could suffer dire consequences financially.  That €1 million settlement a customer got for falling down falls on your shoulders.  Plus, you would suffer negative publicity.  Granted, this does not mean you will be free from emotional fallout, as anyone going through trial is going to suffer a little spiritually.  But with hospitality insurance, you do not have to worry about losing your business in the process.  Your provider will take care of all the odds and ends, giving you time to repair your company's damaged image.
